Kiltwalk 2018

The Edinburgh Kiltwalk is on Sunday 16th September and there is still time to register and take part to raise money for Ravelrig.

We are always looking for new ways to raise money for Ravelrig RDA and over the years a number of volunteers and friends of Ravelrig have taken part in outside events like the Edinburgh or London Marathons, bike rides and sponsored walks.

The Kilt Walk is a great event and one of our volunteers Martha took part in the Glasgow event last year and had a great time.   All you have to do is register on their website,  choose which distance you want to walk, either 26, 13 or 6 miles and get searching for your tartan, training shoes and sponsors.  You’ll need the Charity number for Ravelrig RDA to start raising money for us and we will receive 140% of your sponsorship.

Here’s some links and information for you if you would like to take part.  If you have any questions please let us know on 0131 449 7994 or office@ravelrig-rda.org.uk

  • The Kilt Walk website: http://www.thekiltwalk.co.uk/
  • Ravelrig RDA Charity Number:  SC028670

If you don’t fancy doing it alone, why not gather some of your Ravelrig friends together and #walkforravelrig ?

Riverbend Harris

Barbara and Sally went to collect our new recruit, Riverbend Harris, who will be known as Harris, in mid July to bring him back to his new home here at Ravelrig RDA.

We were able to purchase Harris thanks to a generous grant from the Pentland Neighbourhood Partnership, which has brought our number of ponies back up to eight.   Harris is still young, at just 4 years old and is 13.1 hands, so a great size for our smaller riders.

He is an Eriskay, which is an endangered breed and is quickly settling in the Ravelrig family, meeting the other horses, riders and volunteers.  He is a gentle soul with a cheeky edge to him and loves to be involved in everything.

He is going off for some intensive training to prepare him for his life as an RDA pony and we are all looking forward to welcoming him back for a long happy time at Ravelrig.

Thank you!

We receive a lot of donations at Ravelrig RDA and are so grateful for the generosity of individuals and companies.

This weekend alone we had the Land Rover serviced and put through its MOT Free of Charge thanks to Andy White of White’s Auto Services in Dalry.  It was completely unexpected and such a kind gesture, we are so grateful.

We also received a car wash pack from Halfords at Hermiston Gait to help us get started on our Fundraising Car Wash in September.

Then on Saturday we had another call from our friends at Corstorphine Tesco to say that they had more carrots to donate to us.  Barbara popped along to the store on Saturday evening to collect a trolley load from Andrew the Fruit and Vegetable Manager.  Carrots are a favoured healthy snack for the horses, so we are sure they won’t take too long to crunch their way through them.

Hartpury – RDA National Championships

It was the RDA National Championships two weeks ago at Hartpury, Gloucester and one of our riders Dianne Alan represented Ravelrig RDA, riding Domino from the Borders RDA group.

Dianne kindly wrote the following about the wonderful experience she had at the event.

“Recently I was privileged to be able to travel down to Hartpury college where the RDA National Championships are held.  The event includes Dressage in which I was competing and also show jumping ,driving, and other events.  It  is said to be one of the biggest of this type of competition in the world.  A friend traveled with me  and she found the competition completely inspiring and loved every minute, as did I.  There is a friendship and working together that is not often found in main line equestrian events.

I  had qualified several times in the past  but had been unable to go which made this trip even more special.

For anyone in the future in the position of qualifying and being able to go I would recommend it but would say that you have to look at the situation in context with your own health issue.

In closing, I would like to thank Barbara and her team for all the work they put in, my friend Jill for coming with me and the Borders RDA for the use of their brilliant pony Domino, all helping to make this dream become a reality.

Dianne”

Coop Community Fund

We have just 3 months remaining as one of the Co-op’s three charities they are supporting from the Corslet Place store in Currie.

The Community Fund is a great way to support your chosen charity as they donate 1% of your Coop purchases directly to us and you get 5% back, so we’re all winners.

We are hoping to raise £1,000 to allow us to develop and support our wonderful volunteer coaches who work so hard for us here at Ravelrig.  By raising this money it will ensure regular riding lessons for everyone.

It costs us approximately £70,000 to keep Ravelrig running, looking after the horses and stables so this is a great way to help us with no cost to you.

There are a couple of ways you can become a member of the Coop and it’s just £1.

  • Pop along to the Corslet Place branch in Currie, they will have application forms at the till

or

  • go on line at coop.co.uk/membership

Remember to select Ravelrig RDA as your chosen charity.

Thank you

Crunch Time!

Our lovely friends at Tesco Corstorphine were super generous last week and donated a large amount of carrots for the horses.

The horses love their carrots and apple snacks and could smell them from the field.

Thank you again to TESCO, Flynn has already started to tuck in to the bucket!

Dressage

Everyone at Ravelrig will be cheering for Dianne Allan, one of our Monday night riders who is competing in the RDA National Championships down in Hartpury in Gloucestshire.  The event is running from Friday 13th July until Sunday 15th July and Dianne’s event is on the Saturday.

We all wish her the best of luck on the day, we know she will have an amazing time.

We also want to thank Borders RDA group for allowing Dianne to ride one of their wonderful horses, Domino at the event.

Good Luck and looking forward to hearing all about it!
